I could find no record of Jesse or any member of his family in the 1850 census. There is a James Smith, 36, living in the Orangeburg District, South Carolina, in 1850 with a wife named Polly, 30, but there are no children in the household.

All of Jesse and Polly’s children were born in South Carolina, so they moved to Georgia after 1850. They are living seven houses from Nancy Collins and her daughter Ursula, 13, who married Albert. Neither Jesse or Polly can read or write, and Albert, Emma, and Louisa have attended school in the last year. Jesse owns real estate valued at $150 and has personal property worth $220.
