1840 – Seaborn Hall, 40-50, is in Hamilton County, Tennessee, with two boys under 5 (Robert, Jasper), two 15-20 (Clark, Mat ), two girls under 5 (Adarine, Nancy A.), two 5-10 (Hester, ?), two 10-15 (Mary. Francis), one 15-20 (Theresa), one 20-30 (?), and one 40-50 (Nancy).
1850 – Seaborn Hall, 54, a carpenter born in Georgia about 1796, is living in West Chickamauga, Walker County, with Nancy 51 born in Georgia about 1799, Thirsy 30, both born in Georgia, and Mary 22, Hester 19, Robert 16, (Seaborn) Jasper 14, Adarine 13, Nancy A. 10, Adina 9, and Asbury 6, all born in Tennessee. Adina and Asbury are listed as Halls, but are Nancy Orleana and James Asbury Ramsey. Seaborn owns no real estate. He can read and write, but his wife Nancy cannot.
1860 – Seaborn, 66, and Nancy, 64, are in West Chickamauga, Walker County. Seaborn is born in Georgia and Nancy in Tennessee. He is a farmer. In the household are Hester 28, Francis A. 23, Nancyann 20, Orlena Ramsey 19, and Asbury Ramsey 15, all born in Tennessee. Seaborn owns no property, but has personal wealth of $150. Everyone in the family over 20 can read and write.
1870 – Seabron, 73, born in South Carolina, and Nancy, 70, born in Georgia, are living in Township 11, Range 6 (Stonefort P. O.), Pope County, Illinois. The census script is difficult to make out, but his occupation looks like “farmer/shop.” In the household are Hister 36, and Francis A. 30. Nancy cannot read or write.
1870 – Sabren J. Hall, 34, born in Tennessee, is married to Atta M. 20, born in Tennessee. They are living in Township 11 Range 6 (Stonefort P. O.), Pope County, Illinois next door to Seaborn and Nancy. In the household are John R. 9, and Saburn A., 7, born in Georgia, and Elmina 3, born in Illinois, as well as Elizabeth 47. Sabren is a farmer. Elizabeth cannot read or write. Both Sabren and Atta can read and write, and John R. and Saburn A. attend school.
1880 – S. J. Hall, 43, born in Tennessee, is living in Union, Pope County, Illinois. He is a farmer. His wife is Mira 32, and his children are Mary E. 12, David 8, and Robert J. 2.
1870 – Asburry J. Ramsey, 25, born in Tennessee, is living in Township 11, Range 6 (Stonefort P. O.), Pope County, Illinois next door to Seaborn and Nancy. His wife is Cyntha A., 23, born in Tennessee. In the household are their children Sarah L. 2 and William J. 1, born in Illinois, and Theresy E. Ramsey 51 and Nancy O. Ramsey 26, both born in Tennessee. Asburry is a farmer. Neither Asburry, Theresy or Nancy O. can read or write, but Cyntha A. can.
1860 – James Ferrel, 29, born in Missouri, is living in District 8 (Rock Spring), Walker County, Georgia, with Tabitha (Hall) Ferrel, 35, Mary I. 10, Kester 6, Nancy 4, and Hardy 1.
1880 – James Farrell, 51, born in North Carolina of parents born in North Carolina, is a farmer living in Grand Pier, Pope County, Illinois. His wife is Tobitha 56, born in Tennessee, and their children are America M. 10 and Hardy 20.
1880 – John Hall, 19, born about 1861 in Georgia, is living in Union, Pope County, Illinois, with Margaret 24, R. J. A. Hall 2, and Hester A., 50, his aunt, born about 1830 in Georgia of a father born in North Carolina and a mother born in Tennessee. John is Seaborn Jasper Hall’s son.
Matt and Susan Hall
1850 – Madison Hall, 35, a farmer born about 1815 in Georgia, is living in West Chickamauga, Walker County, with Susan, 30, born about 1820 in Tennessee, and (James) Allen 8, (Arminda) Jane 5, Puss (Priscilla) 3, and John C. 0. They are living one house away from Seaborn and Nancy. Susan cannot read or write.
1860 -- James M. Hall, 35, born in Georgia about 1825, is living in the Leaches District (GMD 1035), Gilmer County, with his wife Susannah, 33, born in Tennessee about 1827. They married about 1843. James Allen 16 (see below), Arminda Jane 15, and Priscilla 12, all born in Tennessee, and John C. 11, Sarah A. 9, William C. 5, and Nancy A. 1, all born in Georgia. James’s profession is not listed. Susannah cannot read or write, but James Allen, Arminda, Priscilla, and John C. all attended school in the last year, perhaps the first members of the Hall family to obtain a formal education.
In 1860, the Leaches District apparently did not exist, and the Gilmer census lists everyone’s residence as Subdivision 33. I deduced that Mat and Susan lived in GMD 1035 from looking at their neighbors in 1860, and where those people lived in 1870.
1870 – James M. Hall, 50, born about 1820 in Georgia, is a wheelwright and “copper” (a common term for police officer in the 19th century, but it may have been short for coppersmith, too) living in the 24th District, Gordon County, with Susannah 46, Arminda J. 28, Priscilla C.? 21, Sarah A. 16, Nancy M. 12, Newton J. 9, and Adolphus F., four months.
1880 – Susan Hall, 58, James M.’s wife, born in Tennessee about 1822, is living in the Truck Wheel District, Pickens County, with her son Adolphus, 12. Adolphus’s father was born in Georgia. The Truck Wheel and Talking Rock Districts are adjacent to each other, with the current town of Talking Rock in the Truck Wheel District. Note that on the census form, the birth state of Susan's parents is marked "unknown," but there are several others on the page with the same designation. Susan is living next door to Hugh Allen, 81, and Eli Sumner and his wife Josephine Kelly Sumner. Hugh Allen’s wife is Elizabeth Jordan, daughter of Robert and Susannah Jordan. Susan Hall’s son James A. Hall is living next door to Robert Jordan’s widow Susannah in 1870 in Gilmer.
1870 – James A. Hall, 26, born about 1844 in Tennessee, is a farmer living in the Truck Wheel District, Pickens County with his wife Eliza Ann 36 (Anna Rosinda’s aunt, sister of Mary Hickman) and Sarah Ann 14. Sarah Ann could be James A. Hall’s sister, although she is with the family in 1870 as well. They are living next door is Anna Stephens, Anna Rosinda Gipson’s grandmother.
1880 – James A. Hall, 39, born in Tennessee about 1841, is living in Town Creek, Gilmer County. His father was born in South Carolina and his mother in Tennessee. He is a shoemaker. His wife is Eliza A., 49, born in North Carolina, and in the household are May A. 7, and Allen, 6, both born in Georgia. Allen is a nephew whose father and mother were born in Georgia.
George W. Hall and Edith Elizabeth Gipson
1900 – George W. Hall, 33, born about 1866 in Georgia of parents born in Georgia, is living in Militia District 849 (the Calhoun district today, but said to be east and south of Calhoun in 1900, possibly incorporating part of the Oostanaula District). He is married to Aedieth E., 39, born in Georgia of parents born in Georgia, and in the household are Robbert A. 13, and Mandy O. 5, both born in Georgia. George and Aedieth cannot read or write. Robert can read, but did not attend school in the last year. The family is renting their farm.
1910 – George W. Hall, 48, born about 1862 in Georgia of a father born in South Carolina and a mother born in Tennessee, is living on Everett Springs Road in the Oostanaula District of Gordon County, with his wife, Edith E., 50, born in Georgia of parents born in Georgia, Robert A. 22, John W. 19, and Octavy M. 16, all born in Georgia. They have been married 28 years and have four children, all living. The identity of the fourth child is unknown; he or she is not in the 1900 census with the family. George is a farmer. He can read and write, but Edith cannot. Robert and John can read but not write, but Octavy can. The family is renting their farm.
1920 – George W. Hall, 58, born in 1862 in Georgia of a father born in South Carolina and a mother born in Tennessee, is a widow living in Plainville, Gordon County, with Charley W. Ray, 28, Amando O. Ray, 26, Paul R. Ray, 6, and James A. Ray, five months. Amando is the only one who can read or write. Charley is a farmer. George has no occupation listed. Paul did not attend school any time since September 1, 1919.
1930 – George W. Hall, 64, born in Georgia about 1866,is living in Lily Pond, Gordon County. His father was born in England (the word “Georgia” was erased and written over) and his mother in Tennessee. His wife is named Pearl A., 24, born in Georgia of parents born in Georgia. George was 21 when he married the first time; Pearl was 17. Both of them can read and write. They rent their farm. They do not own a radio.
